Teaching and Learning Chinese in the Age of AI:
Practices, Research and Challenges

19–20 June 2026, Université Paris Cité, INALCO

The AREC (Association Recherche et Enseignement du Chinois / Association for Research and

Teaching of Chinese) is pleased to invite paper proposals for its 2026 annual conference on the

theme “Teaching and Learning Chinese in the Age of AI: Practices, Research and Challenges.”

Theme

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming the ways languages

are taught and learned, particularly Chinese, across a wide range of contexts: school and

university settings, language courses, self‑directed learning and continuing education. This

conference aims to critically and interdisciplinarily examine current uses of AI, their benefits

and limitations, and their didactic, pedagogical, ethical and institutional implications.

Proposals may address (but are not limited to) the following topics:

-Specificities of learning Chinese in the face of AI. Learning, assessment and pedagogical

transformations in the AI era: pedagogical designs and experiments integrating AI into Chinese

language teaching/learning (face-to-face, hybrid, distance).

-Effects of AI on teaching practices and learning processes (motivation, autonomy,

differentiation, assessment, support).

-Identity and training of Chinese language teachers.

-AI literacy in the context of Chinese language.

-Ethical and institutional issues (the role of the teacher, relationship to knowledge, data and

confidentiality, equity of access to tools).

-Methodological challenges in research on Chinese language didactics and AI. AI-based tools,

corpora and digital resources for work on vocabulary, grammar, speaking, writing and culture.

-Links between research in linguistics, Chinese language didactics, education sciences,

language sciences and digital humanities.

Submission Guidelines

Conference languages: French, Chinese and English. Contributions may include:

-Research papers (completed or ongoing studies);
